Residency applications, overseas mortgage approvals, foreign tax registrations and Golden Visa programmes all have one thing in common - at some point they ask for proof of income. For UK employees, that usually means payslips or salary statements. Getting them apostilled is not complicated, but the format most people receive them in creates an extra step.
The format problem
Most UK payslips are issued electronically - downloaded from an employer's HR portal or received as email attachments. They are printed on plain paper without a wet-ink signature from anyone. The FCDO authenticates wet-ink signatures, seals or stamps. A payslip with no signature gives the FCDO nothing to authenticate. That is why solicitor certification is required before submission.
How the process works
A UK solicitor or Notary Public examines and verifies the original payslip or salary statement, certifies it as a genuine employer-issued document, and applies their wet-ink signature and official stamp. The FCDO then authenticates their signature. The apostille is a physical paper certificate attached to the back of the certified document. It does not verify the salary figures or make any comment on the person's income - it simply confirms the solicitor's or Notary Public certification is genuine.
How many payslips are needed
Requirements vary by destination and purpose. Residency applications commonly ask for three to six months. Mortgage applications abroad may require twelve months. Golden Visa programmes often specify a minimum period of income evidence. Confirm the exact requirement with the receiving authority before having payslips certified - apostilling the wrong number wastes time and money.
Paper apostille or e-Apostille
Where the solicitor's certification carries a verifiable digital signature, the e-Apostille may be available. Otherwise the paper route applies. For countries outside the Hague Convention, embassy attestation is required after the apostille.
