Travelling abroad for medical treatment is rarely a straightforward process. Alongside the practical and emotional weight of managing a healthcare journey internationally, there is often an administrative layer that catches people by surprise: the requirement to provide official UK health documentation to overseas hospitals, clinics or insurers - and to have it properly authenticated before it will be accepted.
Why overseas providers ask for legalised documents
A foreign hospital, insurer or medical facility cannot independently verify a UK GP letter, medical report or test result. An apostille from the FCDO confirms that the document was signed by a registered UK medical professional. Once apostilled, the document is accepted as legally valid in any Hague Apostille Convention member country without further checks.
Documents that may be required
The specific documents required will depend on the country you are travelling to, the type of treatment involved, and the institution providing it. Commonly requested documents include GP referral letters, specialist reports, previous test results and medical histories. Some destinations and insurers also require proof of identity or insurance documents to be apostilled. Always confirm what the receiving institution needs before travelling.
Getting your documents ready
Medical documents signed by a registered UK doctor whose signature is on the FCDO's records can generally be submitted directly for apostille. Where the signatory is not registered, or where you are working from a copy, solicitor or notary public certification is required first. Standard FCDO postal processing takes around ten working days at £45 per document. If your treatment date is approaching, starting the process as early as possible is strongly advisable.
For countries outside the Hague Convention
If your destination is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, embassy attestation will also be required after the apostille. This is an additional step handled by the relevant embassy in London and adds to the overall timeline. Confirm this in advance if you are travelling to a destination in the Gulf or parts of Asia or Africa.
